When the weather outside is frightful, it’s time to make your backyard delightful, and since you’ve someplace place to go; let it snow, let it snow, let it snow! There is no reason to stay inside, bundled up, on the couch all winter long. The winter season is filled with holidays meant to be spent with family, enjoying the company; cooped up inside is no place for that. If you spent all year making your backyard the go-to place for parties and barbeques, it’s high time to make your yard a winter wonderland! Here are some idea for how to make the most of your backyard this season.
Dress-Up Your Gazebo
If you have a gazebo, you can add some walls to your gazebo with curtains or crosshatch wood that will help insulate it through the winter and then your climbing plants can enjoy growing up it in the summer. An outdoor gazebo is a great place to add holiday decorations and lights to. If your gazebos is able, you can even hang a permanent light fixture from its roof to enjoy the space, even in the short winter days that turn to night quickly. If your gazebo is large enough, you can place a fire pit in the middle and enjoy a nice crackling fire to gather around, enjoying warm eggnog and telling tales of seasons past.
Lights
Most people decorate the front of their house with holiday lights for passersbys to enjoy, but miss the opportunity to light up their own sparkling wonderland in the backyard! If you have a gazebo or a wooden play structure, you can string lights from the outlet on your back porch, across your lawn, to the structure and back. It will provide a dazzling light display as well as light up a place for your friends and family to gather and enjoy each other’s company. If you are feeling ambitious, you can run strings of lights (and garland!) on the fenceline all around your house to provide extra glow.
Trees
There is no reason to leave all the decorations to the Christmas tree in your living room, dress up all of property’s trees with a few ornaments and garland to create a full festive look. If you have a lot of trees, pick a few to adorn, or hang just a few ornaments in all of them. You can use popcorn and cranberry garland strands as well as pinecones covered in peanut butter and birdseed to decorate naturally and provide snacks to the birds and squirrels who stuck around for the winter. A painted birdhouse provides a warm home for our feathered friends and helps to decorate the trees too.
Firepit
A firepit won’t provide a chimney for jolly, present-toting visitors, but you can still hang your stockings along it for added holiday decoration. Not only can you stay warm, but you can make s’mores and sing carols as you gather around the fire’s glowing warmth. If you don’t already have a firepit, they are relatively inexpensive and easy to install. If have the safe space to install a fire pit, it can be a great alternative to an indoor fireplace, just don’t build your snowman too close!
